8 Fall 2024 Sneaker Trends for Cozy, Comfortable Style

There’s a time and a place for every type of footwear. As much as heels, loafers, clogs, boots, and sandals have undeniable style, we’re undeniably partial to sneakers when it comes to day-to-day shoes. Versatile in design, sneakers are just as easy to wear with athleisure ensembles as dresses and skirts. Sometimes the pairing makes total sense, and in other instances, we see wrong shoe theory at play, but regardless, sneakers have cemented themselves as must-have footwear regardless of athletic interest. And this fall, “nostalgic sneakers like Adidas Sambas, Converse, and Vans are making a strong comeback, driven by the resurgence of 2000s fashion trends,” says celebrity stylist and Carte Blanche founder Sammie the Stylist. “Their iconic designs and retro appeal offer a perfect blend of comfort and style, making them a go-to choice for those looking to channel a throwback vibe this season.”

Wild animal prints in both neutral and bold colors have made the rounds in 2024. This fall, stylist and content creator Audree Kate López expects leopard print sneakers to soar to a new fashion status. “This year we have seen a resurgence of leopard print taking over, and you can expect this print to stay in the mainstream through 2025,” she says. “In my opinion, animal print, specifically leopard print, is always in style. It’s an easy way to incorporate a print to your outfit, and it’s neutral, so it’s easy to digest and mix in with other colors.” Not a fan of leopard spots? López says snakeskin and crocodile sneaker accents are worth experimenting with, as well. Meanwhile, Sammie says to have fun with a touch of tiger.

Suede Textures

Suede sneakers have been a cornerstone of 2024 style thanks to brands like Adidas and Puma. That said, López and Sammie agree that the fuzzy silhouettes trending across footwear at large are most suitable for fall. “Suede shoes are set to be a fall favorite due to their rich texture and classic appeal, making them a stylish choice for the cooler months,” Sammie says.

“The suede trainer has had the fashion community in a chokehold this year,” López adds. “This retro shoe is surprisingly versatile—you can dress it up with a dress, skirt, or suit, or keep it casual with pants and a neutral color.” When shopping the trend for fall, López suggests opting for cooler, darker hues like navy, burgundy, emerald, and chocolate.

Oxblood—a rich burgundy hue—is perhaps the most popular color of fall, year after year. This year, stylists say we can expect the color to pop up in many footwear silhouettes, including sneakers. “It’s all about berry shades this season,” says leading fashion expert, stylist, and author of the book, You Can’t Leave the House Naked, Lindsey Bernay. “Hues of red, deep burgundy, and purple are the new neutrals for this fall. Mix that with the notorious and ever-stylish Nike Dunks, and you’re going to love your daily look.”

Metallic Kicks

Metallic sneakers have made a shining statement in fashion throughout 2024, with no sign of slowing down as we head into fall. “Metallic silver sneakers are set to be a standout trend this fall because they effortlessly combine style and versatility,” Sammie says. “Whether paired with classic denim for a laid-back look, joggers for an athleisure vibe, or a skirt to add a touch of shine, these sneakers add a modern edge to any outfit.”

Whether you’re a fan of dopamine dressing or simply want to incorporate a pop of color into your otherwise neutral get-up, multicolored sneakers can elevate your overall look. “Wild and colorful sneakers are exactly what your wardrobe is missing—you can grab any color of the rainbow,” Bernay says. “I love a retro-style sneaker in a bold color for fall 2024. The vintage style and funky color palette of this style energizes any outfit and celebrates the classic silhouette.”

Speaking of retro sneakers, Sammie and López agree that vintage-inspired sporty sneakers will continue to trend through fall 2024. “Sporty sneakers, particularly classic tennis shoes and soccer-style designs, are expected to be a fall favorite for their timeless appeal and versatile style,” Sammie shares. “Their blend of retro charm and modern comfort makes them a go-to choice for effortlessly elevating casual outfits throughout the season.” As for which brands to shop, López says the Adidas Samba, Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66, Nike Killshot, and Puma Super Liga styles are the must-haves.

Grandpa Sneakers

According to López, the running sneaker is the “it” sneaker of 2024. But instead of going for any random cushy-soled silhouette, López says to prioritize chunky, retro designs reminiscent of dad sneakers or your grandpa’s style. “I love this trend because it’s the perfect example of the ‘wrong shoe theory’—mixing feminine pieces (like skirts, lace, and metallics) with a clunky gray running sneaker somehow works,” she marvels.

And remember: Grandpa sneakers aren’t just for leisurely strolls or the gym. “All around Europe, you will see them paired with wide-leg trousers or athleisure,” Bernay says. “The chunky shape and various color options make these sneakers perfect for nostalgic yet cool fashion.”

This may seem boring, but Bernay says that black sneakers are back in a big way for fall 2024. The reason? They’re chic, versatile, and wear well, meaning you won’t have to be as worried about scuffing them up on your autumn adventures. When shopping for black sneakers (or any fall sneaker trends, really), Sammie says to consider chunkier silhouettes with futuristic designs, lifted soles, and exaggerated lines.
