7 Shoes to Wear with a Sundress to Upgrade Your Look

As fun as getting dressed every day can be, it also can be a challenge. Even if you love fashion, sometimes coordinating the ideal combo of a top, pants, shoes, and accessories can seem like a struggle. That’s why we’re such huge fans of sundresses: They streamline getting ready, so once you’ve selected the dress you want to wear, all you have to do is pick a pair of shoes. Not sure which to choose? Ahead, we got a stylist’s opinion on the seven best shoes to wear with a sundress, complete with product picks.

While dresses are more associated with formal occasions than other outfit options like pants and a top, that doesn’t mean you have to opt for heels or another “put-together” style of shoe. Sneakers can pair particularly well with sundresses, creating a laid-back combo that easily works for all your busy summer days.

“I love pairing a sneaker with a sundress—it’s my ultimate combo for an effortless cool-girl outfit during the summer,” says fashion stylist Audree Kate López, who notes that it’s an ideal combo for vacation as well as for simply running errands around town. Her favorite duo? “I live for comfy, flowy dresses paired with chunky dad sneakers, Sambas, or the classic all-white sneaker—you cannot go wrong.”

Strappy Sandals

Sandals are perhaps the most obvious footwear option for sundress weather, and we love a style that goes all out on the straps. Sold in flat and heeled options, strappy sandals add a whimsical touch to any dress silhouette, from mini to midi to maxi. “A strappy sandal is the perfect way to style a sundress however you want, from casual days to date night,” López says. Her favorite styles? Gladiators, kitten heels, and Tevas.

Ballet Flats

Craving a functional, on-trend footwear choice to go with all your favorite sundresses? Reach for ballet flats. “Ballet flats have become the shoe of the year,” López says, noting that they’re a trendy, transitional footwear pick that works well with pants, skirts, and dresses alike. “They’re comfy, lightweight, and add a dash of balletcore to the outfit.” Whether you go classic or embrace a modern square toe or mesh design, you can’t go wrong.

Clogs

Clogs have been a staple for the recent coastal grandmother and grandmillennial style trends, and they happen to pair well with dresses of all lengths. “Clogs are the unexpected shoe of the season,” López says. “I love the chunky heels and how the silhouette adds a pop of color or pattern to the outfit, making the outfit more interesting and less ‘soft.’”

Platform Slides

Who doesn’t love a little lift? “Y2K trends are still alive and well, and you can expect to see platform sandals this spring and summer,” López says. From mini flatform slides and chunky flip flops to lifted strappy sandals, there’s a platform slide shoe for every sundress silhouette. All you have to decide is whether you want to keep it casual or a bit more dressed up.

Loafers

To create a more refined sundress ensemble that’s as fitting for the office as it is for brunch, consider slipping into a pair of loafers. “The ballet flat’s cooler, older sister is the loafer,” López says. Her favorite way to style this shoe silhouette with sundresses? “Pair a chunkier loafer with an oversized chiffon dress, or a vacation-forward knit piece to make it more weekday-friendly,” she suggests.

Cowboy Boots

Possibly our favorite shoe to wear with mini sundresses is the cowboy boot. “If you want a comfy shoe for spring and summer but more fashion-forward than a sneaker, opt for cowboy boots,” López says. “They’re trendy, perfect for festivals and concerts , and can really take a sundress from ‘eh’ to showstopper.”
