Next Gen
Welcome to Byrdie’s series, Next Gen, where we profile Gen Z celebrities, influencers, and entrepreneurs. As a collective, members of Gen Z are dynamic trendsetters and culture shifters. And when it comes to beauty and wellness, they have ushered more creativity, inclusivity, and transparency into the industry. In this column, we’re stepping into the minds of some of the most notable Gen Z’ers to learn more about how they are redefining beauty, the products they swear by, and their plans for the future.
Skai Jackson has lived quite the life in her 22 years on Earth. As a child, she entered the entertainment industry, working on hit series like Disney’s Jessie and Bunk’d. Jackson’s talents have taken her to several film sets as well—The Smurfs, The Watsons Go to Birmingham, and My Dad’s a Soccer Mom, to name a few.
Throughout her career, Jackson has also graced the small screen in various commercials, most notably appearing in a Band-Aid Brand ad in 2008, where she sang the catchy “Stuck On You” jingle. Now, sixteen years later, Jackson is embracing a full-circle moment in her life and partnering with the brand again to recreate her beloved commercial. Ahead, Jackson opens up about the nostalgic partnership, the lessons she’s learned as a child star, and her current approach to beauty and self-care.
What has it been like getting to work with Band-Aid Brand again?
I remember thinking last year, I hope I get to work with them again. Now, it’s a year later, and it happened. It’s been so much fun to work with the Band-Aid Brand again. I hold onto those memories from when I was five, and I loved revisiting them. It was great to sing the jingle again and create videos with the brand.
Are there any other childhood memories you look back on fondly?
Being in The Smurfs movie with Neil Patrick Harris was so much fun. There are so many things that I’ve done, and sometimes I don’t remember them all. Often, fans will bring these moments up on Twitter and I’ll see it and can’t believe I did that. I am always thankful for these opportunities, but there are so many to choose from.
What are some of the lessons you learned early on in your career?
I’ve learned to always be myself, and if there’s something I want to do, I should never let anyone discourage me. Being in the industry, you can sometimes get discouraged or overthink. But if there’s something you really want to do, you should always do it. That’s something I wish I could tell my younger self.
What’s the best piece of beauty advice you’ve ever received?
Less is more. When I was younger, I watched a lot of YouTube tutorials and thought you had to do a lot to achieve the perfect makeup or hair look. But that’s not the case. When I was younger, my makeup routine used to take an hour. Now, it takes me 15 minutes. I just apply a skin tint, do my brows, apply eyelashes, and use lip gloss.
Are there any viral beauty trends you want to try?
Whenever I wear lip liner, it always comes off after eating or drinking. On TikTok, I saw a girl use this lip stain as a lip liner, and now I want to try it.
What beauty essentials are always in your bag?
I have to keep hand sanitizer, moisturizer to prevent my hands from getting dry, and Ourtone Band-Aids with me. I also always carry lip gloss with me.
What else are you working on this year?
I have so many fun projects coming up. I’m the type of person who doesn’t like to talk much about what I’m doing, but I recently did a movie called Sheroes on Amazon Prime that you can watch now.
Do you have any advice for aspiring Gen Z actors?
Don’t ever give up. The industry can be hard; sometimes, you’ll hear “no” more than “yes.” That’s okay, though, because not everything in the world is meant for you. I had to learn that. So, it’s important not to get discouraged and continue to perfect your craft no matter what.
Aside from work, how do you practice self-care?
My favorite things are getting a massage or going to the chiropractor. My back can get stiff and needs a reset sometimes. If I’m at home, I love to do my skincare routine and hang out with my dog. I’m such a chill person when I’m not working. I love spending the day at home, watching my shows, and ordering from UberEats.
