You can’t go wrong with pairing sneakers with denim: They’re like two peas in a pod. “If you’re looking for a casual combo for travel or outdoor activities, opt for a sneaker,” says NYC-based fashion stylist Audree Kate López. “If you want to dress up the denim shorts, opt for a sleek silhouette in a neutral color like white or black; if you want to add a pop of color, grab a pair of colorful street sneakers like Adidas Gazelles, New Balance 327 Sneakers, or platform high-top Converse.”

Woven Mules

You may have noticed that woven slides are making a comeback. The laid-back yet fashion-forward footwear silhouette is a great option for dressing up denim just a smidge, especially if you opt for a pointed mule. “Cut-off denim shorts paired back to a mule elongate the leg by allowing for an uninterrupted line, drawing your eye to the ankle (the slimmest part),” says FP stylist Julie Parladé. “A mule can also help balance the casual nature of denim shorts by dressing them up a little. And by showing off the ankle, mules are great for any length of shorts.”

Ballet Flats

Ballet flats came back in a major way over the past year, and they’re a great option to pair with denim shorts on days when you want to feel put-together but not too dressed up. “Ballet flats are the perfect in-between if you don’t want to wear open-toe sandals but don’t want heavy sneakers,”   López says. “A ballet flat can dress up your denim shorts and elongate your legs [more than] a sneaker or chunky shoe silhouette.”

Strappy Sandals

Strappy sandals and heels might feel like an odd match for denim, but the fanciful, party-ready silhouette helps balance out jean shorts’ nonchalant appeal. “I love a strappy sandal with Bermuda cut-offs and an oversized statement blouse,” López says. “It’s the perfect mix of something casual (the shorts), something fancy (the top), and something in-between (the sandal).”

Cowboy Boots

Cowboy boots are a classic denim pairing. Whether you opt for tall, mid-calf, or short boots, you can expect to look like a chic Western dream. “In my opinion, a cowboy boot is just as versatile as a white sneaker—and it’s the shoe of the season,” López says. “Cowboy boots instantly elevate your look and add some fun personality to the outfit. They can be worn day or night, they’re perfect for protecting your feet at a concert or festival, and they’re comfortable.”

Kitten Heels

Looking for another way to dress up your denim shorts without stepping into stilettos?  López and Parladé agree that a kitten heel is the way to go. “If you want to transition your shorts from day to night or dress them up for a weekend brunch, pair them with a kitten heel,” López says. “It’s Carrie Bradshaw-coded and giving model-off-duty.”

Logistically, Parladé says the footwear choice is all about balance. “Like the mule, a minimal kitten heel balances the weight of a denim short while elevating it, [which is] perfect for an outing or work setting,” she explains.

Chunky Dad Sandals

Another comfortable, casual option is chunky dad sandals or slip-ons. These can be anything from Crocs and Hoka Recovery Slides to Tevas and other velcro sandals. “My go-to combination for vacation is a chunky dad velcro sandal or chunky platform slides,” López reveals. “They’re comfy for travel and walking around, and they make your outfit feel a little more it-girl.”

Gladiator Sandals

Another footwear silhouette that’s back from the dead to complement your denim shorts? Gladiator sandals. Available in short, medium, and tall silhouettes, these strappy sandals can tailor a pair of denim shorts into a statement-making ensemble. “A great choice for summer, gladiator-style sandals balance longline shorts nicely, with added comfort and walkability,” Parladé says. “Additional hardware on the shoes add an edgy appeal to denim.”

Mesh Flats

If you’ve been on TikTok lately, you’ve likely noticed mesh flats flooding your feed. “In case you haven’t heard yet, mesh flats are the new shoe of the summer,” López says. “If you’re in a super hot or humid climate, I think mesh flats are a perfect alternative to a ballet flat, loafer, sneaker, or any material that will make your feet sweat.”

While López is particularly fond of the Khaite rhinestone mesh flats “for a subtle hint of sparkle and point of interest to your outfit,” you can also get a similar look at Target for a fraction of the price (hence why TikTokers have been flocking to the platform to share the dupe lately).

Platform Heels

For a groovy approach to denim shorts styling, consider pairing your cut-offs or Bermudas with a pair of platform heels or chunky wedges. These shoes elevate the textile without making it look too dressed up. “The wedge has made her comeback, so if you love a comfy heel, add a wedge or a platform heel to your summer wardrobe,” López says. “You can opt for a Mary Jane platform heel, espadrille wedge, or any material you’re looking for.”

Loafers

For a casual yet refined vibe, consider stepping into a pair of loafers the next time you opt for a pair of shorts. “I love pairing a chunky loafer and white crew sock with denim shorts,” López says. “Whether your personal style is preppy, grungy, or the Scandi cool-girl, a loafer can elevate a pair of high-waisted shorts or low-rise Bermudas.”

Parladé agrees, noting that she particularly enjoys pairing loafers with micro shorts. “A classic loafer combined with a white crew sock is another great shoe pairing for denim shorts, particularly those with smaller inseams as they add great polish and balance to a shorter short,” she explains. “This combination is work-appropriate and another great option for strolling in the city.”
