Chapell Roan Paid Homage to Drag Icon Divine With Skinny Brows and Blue Eyeshadow

The rise of Chapell Roan feels like a once-in-a-generation event. While she’s been perusing music since she was 17, she was catapulted to fame in what feels like overnight after drawing a packed Coachella crowd that sang (and danced) to her single, “HOT TO GO!.” She’s worked with Olivia Rodrigo and has several TikTok hits under her belt, but what makes her truly stand out is her thoughtful style. She always has a reference—you may have seen her cosplay of Lady Liberty at the Governer’s Ball in New York—and her latest look for Kentuckiana Pride is no difference.

For her Pride performance in Louisville, Kentucky, Roan was inspired by drag icon Divine, who was a muse of filmmaker John Waters, and appeared in many of his movies including Pink Flamingos. Divine’s signature included exaggerated brows, sky-blue eyeshadow, and a brown-and-pink lip. “Inspired by Divine the most beautiful woman in the world,” the singer shared on Instagram.

The 26-year-old wore her red hair teased and curled with a tiny side bang. To achieve the Divine makeup look, makeup artist Andrew Dahling crafted sky-high skinny brows that were detailed with white and blue gradient eyeshadow. On her actual eyelids, Roan wore a gray sparkly eyeshadow and graphic cat eye eyeliner with spidery lashes. Lots of Pepto pink blush flushed her cheeks and took the place of bronzer. The finishing touch was her exaggerated brown lipliner paired with pink lipgloss.

She even wore the same outfit as Divine in the movie’s poster but with a twist. Roan added red rhinestones to the bodice and wore a cheetah print catsuit underneath that peeked out of the dress. The rest of her band’s makeup also took inspiration from Divine’s look.

Roan has spoken many times about how drag queens have inspired her artistry and her signature makeup look, which includes blue eyeshadow and a white base. At Coachella, she said she’s “Your favorite artist’s favorite artist,” which is a phrase coined by Sasha Colby, winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race’s 15th season. Colby famously said on the show “I’m your favorite drag queen’s favorite drag queen.”

From Lady Miss Kier to the Statue of Liberty to Divine, Roan loves a good reference. We can’t wait to see who she channels next.
