I’ll be honest: I have yet to actually watch X, Pearl, or Maxxxine, but I’m completely obsessed with the powder blue eyeshadow Mia Goth wears in the trilogy’s first installment. I’m not the only one, as her look—freckles, pigtail braids, and that iconic blue shadow—has gone viral on TikTok, with hundreds of thousands of videos recreating Goth’s look.
With the final segment in the X trilogy, Maxxine, releasing on July 3, Goth is back again to reprise her role of Maxine Minx, and this time, she finally touches down in Hollywood. Though she seems to have left her blue eyeshadow behind, Maxine wears a bevy of ’80s glam looks in the trailer that are begging for the same viral treatment. In anticipation of the film, A24 and beauty brand Half Magic teamed up on a makeup kit inspired by the films—including that iconic blue shadow.
Just released, the Maxxxine Makeup Kit includes three products: a matte liquid eyeshadow, a glitter lip gloss, and a pressed shadow single, so it’s easier than ever to achieve a look that screams “I’m a star!” Ahead, everything you need to know about the killer release.
The Inspiration
Set in the ’70s, X follows aspiring adult film star, Maxine Mix, and her crew, who are terrorized by an older woman named Pearl (also played by Goth) while shooting on her farm. Spoiler alert: Minx is the only one who makes it out alive, and Maxxxine jumps to the ’80s where she’s trying to make it in Hollywood. The second film in the series, Pearl, serves as a prequel to X, revealing Pearl’s backstory. Considering this is A24 we’re talking about (the studio behind Euphoria and Priscilla), the aesthetics are extremely on-point, especially when it comes to the beauty looks.
Half Magic worked closely with the films’ lead makeup designer, Sarah Rubano, on the set. “This collab could not be more authentic,” the brand’s founder (and Euphoria’s lead makeup artist), Donni Davy, shared in an Instagram post. “Not only is everything in [the kit] Sarah Rubano-approved, but it’s the exact shades you’ll see in the movies.”
The Products
The star of the kit is the baby blue liquid eyeshadow, Chromaddiction Matte Eye Paint in X-Factor, which is the exact shade Goth wears in the movie. Rubano shared that she mixed several shadows together to create Maxine’s signature powder blue shade, and the team at Half Magic recreated the shade in its creamy Chromaddiction formula. “With X we did a lot of exploration with the blue,” said Rubano of the shade. “It was really rewarding when we finally go to that iconic blue.”
Then, there’s the Magic Drip Gloss in the shade VHS Vixen, an ’80s-inspired shimmery rose for a flushed effect. When making the gloss, Rubano was very particular, asking Davy for a shade that wasn’t quite coral, red, or pink—instead the duo landed on a soft rosy shade that would “draw the audience in with her lips,” says Rubano.
Finally, there’s the brand’s Eyeshadow Single in Hollywood 1985, a shimmering gunmetal shade for the ultimate ’80s smoky eye. “It resonated almost immediately,” said Rubano. “It’s sleek, It’s silky, it’s sexy, it’s dangerous.” The shadow has Half Magic’s signature silky finish and putty-like texture that can be applied with a finger or brush.
Like all of Half Magic’s products, everything in the Maxxine Makeup Kit is vegan- and cruelty-free. The set has already sold out on Halfmagic.com, but you can still shop it at Ultabeauty.com for now.
