When I traveled to Tokyo earlier this summer, I did not rock a fiery red bob, but do you know who did? Hair chameleon extraordinaire Megan Thee Stallion, of course. The Megan singer is keeping us news writers on our toes—one day she’s wearing chunky pastel highlights and reviving the skunk hair trend. The next, she’s rocking orange creamsicle hair or an intricate colorful metallic manicure. You get the point—she’s so Julia. Her latest big change featured a bold take on the blunt bob.
Stallion swapped her pastel hair in London for a bright red bob for her Tokyo show which she shared on Instagram, yesterday July 21. “Took myself shopping as soon as soon as I got to JAPAN. Should I do a video showing y’all everything I found?” Stallion asked commenters in her caption. And, while we’d love a shopping haul (Japan is known for its vast range of designer vintage) her new bob immediately caught our eye.
Bobs have been getting a modern refresh as a trendy cut this spring and summer. It’s a go-to style for when you want a dramatic change, and a bright color like Stallion’s is all the more eye-catching. Stallion’s blunt cut rested right at her chin, with A-line bangs sitting right at her eyebrows. The molten lava color had flecks of black streaks which gave the shade a dark-to-light ombré effect.
It checks all the boxes of a Stallion-approved cut, and it’s massively impressive to see all the different cuts and colors the 29-year-old can wear so naturally (they don’t call her a hair chameleon for nothing!). This isn’t the first time she’s rocked a colorful bob either. Stallion wore a longer cotton candy-colored bob for her “Boa” music video this spring.
It wouldn’t be a Stallion look without a cool manicure. For her Tokyo nails, she opted for a style that re-imagined butterfly wings into rainbow colors. On square-shaped nails, she painted red and pink polish on her thumbs and pointer fingers, orange and green on her middle and ring fingers, and a blue-purple shade on her pinky fingers. Each nail was outlined with the circular silhouette of butterfly wings.
Makeup-wise, Stallion tends to keep it simple with a version of a soft-glam look. This time, she opted for her signature nude lipgloss and liner, pairing it with a bold cat-eye black eyeliner that she applied in the waterline and topped with a fleck of sparkle in her inner corner.
She kept the colorful vibe going through her outfit, styling a pink and blue denim matching set with blue heels and a black bag.
We’ll be adding Stallion’s molten lava bob to the long list of her most inventive and cool hairstyles. Now, consider us seated for the upcoming Japan shopping haul (and her next playful hairdo).
