I have a confession: I only threw away my original 2010 Urban Decay Naked Palette a year ago. Despite the fact that I have piles of palettes due to my work as a beauty writer and rarely ever reached for it, I couldn’t let it go. After all, it was the first eyeshadow palette I splurged on back in my retail salesgirl days, when I should have been buying groceries or gas but instead decided that a lineup of twelve perfect neutral eyeshadows was more worth my hard-earned paycheck.
And you know what? It was. I used it every single day. I used it to tint my brows (love you, Buck). I used it for bar-hopping smoky eyes. I used it for weddings, dates, day-to-day looks, everything. It was a pivotal part of my life and when it came time to say goodbye, I was genuinely sad. Sure, the flocked velvet case was dusty and gross, but there was still a ton of product left even after years of constant use. A worthwhile investment, IMO.
But now, I no longer have to mourn my loss, as Urban Decay is finally bringing back the OG palette we all know and love—at least for a little bit. Ahead, everything you need to know.
The Inspiration
As legend has it, the original Naked Palette was born in 2010 after Urban Decay asked its product development team to choose the four eyeshadows they’d bring to a deserted island. They couldn’t decide on just four, and thus the 12-shade palette was born, a range of light cream matte to shimmery gold to black and charcoal gray. The palette was such a smash that Urban Decay soon created a plethora of sibling palettes, including the cooler Naked 2, the rosy-toned Naked 3, and a red and orange-based Naked Heat.
Though eyeshadow palettes have been around since the dawn of time, makeup-wise, the Naked Palette really did spark an explosion of similar offerings from basically every brand and was a mainstay of the YouTube tutorial era. Without it, we probably wouldn’t have some of the palettes and products that go viral on TikTok today! However, the Naked Palette obsession met its end in 2018 when it was officially discontinued… until now.
The Naked Palette was gone but never forgotten; she made many cameos in TikTok videos of people rediscovering their “vintage” makeup or sheepishly admitting that they were still using their palette even though you’re technically supposed to toss powder eyeshadow after two to three years.
Whether you used the OG faithfully in the early 2010s like I did or have heard rumors of its greatness and want to try it for yourself, you’ll be thrilled to know that the Naked Palette is coming back for a limited time. Hopefully they’ve got a lot of stock, because at one point, one Naked Palette was sold every six seconds!
The New Naked Palette
The 12 shades we know and love, including my beloved Buck and Half Baked, are back and better than ever with a reloaded, reimagined formula to keep up with 2020s requirements. They’re creamier, easier to blend, and longer-lasting than their predecessors—and they’re now vegan too. The dual-ended brush has been upgraded to cruelty-free status, but the brown velvet packaging remains the same.
The 2024 version of the Naked Palette hits Ulta, Ulta.com, and Urban Decay’s website on August 4 and retails for $59. Don’t hesitate to purchase because this one is not going to last long! (And yes, I’m absolutely buying a new one.)
