Beyoncé’s Blonde Beehive Makes Her Look Like Retro Royalty

Beyhive, meet beehive. While the hairstyle has been around for quite some time (it first gained popularity in the ’60s when women were sick of the wide bouffant style but still wanted some height), it’s about to have a major resurgence—and I’m not just talking the baby beehives we’ve been seeing on red carpets lately. I know this because Beyoncé just wore her own tall-as-can-be version of the style. And when Beyoncé does something, the world follows.

On May 1, the 42-year-old took to Instagram to share yet another major Cowboy Carter era look. This time around, the theme was blue—icy light-washed denim blue to be precise—with the artist rocking a blue outfit, blue boots, and a major dab of shimmery blue eyeshadow. When surrounded by the shade, even her silvery blonde hair took on a blueish tint.

Adding at least six inches to her height, Beyoncé’s locks were teased and piled on top of her head, with a few curled strands left out for good measure. Light and pouf-y, the actual beehive’s texture resembles something close to cotton candy from the front, and in a photo taken from behind you can see the style’s true artistry. Her lengthy strands were formatted into the perfect French twist.

The Grammy winner chose the style for a trip to Japan, bringing hairstylist Neal Farinah (and husband Jay-Z) along for the ride. “It’s Dolly P,” commented a fan on the stylist’s Instagram post showcasing the look. “I see you Neal, what a ‘do.”

Makeup artist Rokael Lizama was also along for the journey, though we don’t know quite yet what magic products he used to get that perfect glittery shadow.

“Loved this baby blue eye we did teasing some exciting new products,” he wrote via Instagram, adding that the lip was the work of Rokael Beauty’s Lip Shader ($19) in the taupe-nude shade Transfigure, and Whipped Lip Oil ($24) in the soft pink-nude Florascend. So, so good—and that’s all without even mentioning her perfect nude long-oval manicure. Yeah. We’re buzzing.
