Blake Lively Matched Her Y2K Butterfly Mani to Britney Spears’ Dress

After much hype, Blake Lively’s latest film, It Ends With Us, premiered in New York City on August 6. As a testament to her commitment to method dressing—Lively plays a florist named Lily Bloom—she wore the floral vintage Versace gown that Britney Spears famously wore to the brand’s fashion show in 2002 (yes, it was the actual dress the pop star wore). Lively wrote a shoutout to Spears on Instagram, saying she hoped to pay homage to her for the evening.

“The ultimate queen who made us all want to sparkle and write and share our stories,” she wrote on a photo of the pop star wearing the dress in 2002. “Britney, us millennials all have a story of a moment, or of years that you made us want to shine and inspire awe, with strength, and joy and immensely hard work. Thank you for your example and your contribution to women telling their stories.”

Lively centered the rest of her look around the show-stopping dress with elegant wavy hair, matte pink makeup, and an intricate manicure that is not to be missed. The look was all about 2000s nostalgia, featuring a sheer nude pink base with hand-painted butterflies and flowers.  “We were inspired by the ultimate symbol of rebirth; the guardian of gardens, the butterfly,” wrote manicurist Elle Gerstein on Instagram. “B chose the Versace dress worn by Britney Spears in 2002. I set the mani; and used the perfect shimmery base by OPI.” She also revealed that Lively, who she calls “the ultimate craft queen,” had a hand in the manicure, and she placed the butterflies on the manicure herself.

To get the look, Gerstein says she applied one coat of OPI GelColor Stay Classic Base Coat before adding two coats of OPI Switch to Portrait Mode. Then, she added the Lily Bloom-inspired florals with pink, blue, and yellow polishes from OPI’s Your Way and My Me Era collections. Gerstein finished it off with the OPI GelColor Stay Shiny Top Coat. Lively was accompanied by her husband and fellow actor, Ryan Reynolds, who also incorporated flowers into his look of the evening. This is no surprise as Lively turned heads last week in a catsuit inspired by Reynolds’ new movie Deadpool and Wolverine. Lively’s It Ends With Us is slated to hit theaters August 9.
