Charlotte Tilbury on Her New Tubing Mascara

Believe it or not, there once was a time when having a global beauty brand and being a top makeup artist did not go hand in hand. Before there were influencer and celebrity brands galore, there were a select few that truly had a pulse on the industry. Amongst the first to do it? Charlotte Tilbury. The beginning of Tilbury’s career coincided with the iconic supermodel era of the 90s. So it’s no surprise that the core of her brand mission, and its launches, are a direct result of the years she spent backstage giving supermodels her signature glowy glam. 

Now, the beauty mogul is back again with another innovative launch—this time all centered around the eyes. Meet the new Exagger-Eyes Volumizing Mascara, Charlotte Tilbury’s first tubing mascara. Its jet-black formula promises to create volume at the root for up to 28 hours. As we all know, whenever there is a new Tilbury innovation, there is an equally extravagant campaign that follows. To celebrate the new Exagger-Eyes mascara, Tilbury tapped three of her muses, Kate Moss, Jourdan Dunn, and Bella Tilbury, to join a sultry, film noir-themed shoot. “Charlotte and I may have been best friends for over 30 years, but her vision and continued creativity continue to amaze me,” Moss shares exclusively with Byrdie. “The shoot for Exagger-Eyes Volume Mascara was no exception, entering her film noir world blew me away – it was like being on an iconic Hollywood movie set.” 

We caught up with Tilbury to get the inside scoop on her new launch and ask the expert makeup artist about her secret tips and tricks to achieving bold fluttery lashes. Below, learn all about the new Exagger-Eyes mascara, Tilbury’s best application tips, her summer makeup hacks, and more. 

The New Exagger-Eyes Volume Mascara

If you know the Charlotte Tilbury brand, then you know it is no stranger to the mascara game. There are already three mascaras available, all created with a specific beauty look in mind. However, Tilbury still felt that something was from the award-winning lineup. She wanted to create something that would resemble the effects of going to the hair salon but for your lashes. “I always had a vision of taking the incredible effects of a hair-styling tool and bottling them into a volumizing mascara,” she explains. “I wanted to create a mascara that mimics the immediate hold it gives, the instant curvature from using a curling tong, and that long-lasting curl from root to tip.”

The result? The new Exagger-Eyes Volume Mascara—the brand’s first tubing mascara. “It has lash-plumping polymers that coat every lash, giving you nine times more volume in just one coat,” says Tilbury.  “[The brush] gives you that instant root-to-tip volume and two times curl effect, while also detangling and extending each lash. The bristles are soft on one side and sharp on the other. This fans out and defines the lashes for instant volume and definition. The ultra-curved brush bugs, grips, and separates every single lash.” 

Even the exact tint of the formula was created to deliver color-contrast optics for a bigger, brighter appearance to the eyes. “Color-wise, I wanted to create the most beautiful, glossy, inky-deep shade of black for show-stopping definition.” The goal here is bigger, thicker, volumized lashes from the initial swipe of the wand. The smudge-proof, flake-proof, and humidity-proof formula is a labor of love and took over 10 years to develop.

How It Compares to Tilbury’s Other Mascara Formulas

So how exactly does this new mascara hold up against the other Charlotte Tilbury formulas? “With Pillow Talk Push Up Lashes, I gave you definition and length. With Full Fat Lashes, I gave you an enhanced everyday lash look. With Legendary Lashes Volume 2, I gave you a fanned-out volume,” says Tilbury. “Now I am giving a brand-new innovation of exaggerated lashes for your most iconic eyes.” In other words, if you are someone who likes the elaborate and overstated length and volume of your lashes, then this new product is for you. 

It has become common practice to use two, or even up to three, different mascaras to get the exact finish you desire. In this case, it’s not only unnecessary but discouraged. “We have all been there, layering different mascaras to achieve the lash effect we want. But there is no need to mix and match with Exagger-Eyes,” says Tilbury. “Over the years I have studied every lash type and identified what each one needs to give the most exaggerated lashes and beautifully framed eyes. Whether you have sparse or thick, long or short, curly or straight, Exagger-Eyes will curl, lengthen, thicken, and volumize.”

How to Get Bold Fluttery Lashes

No matter how amazing a beauty product may be, it will never perform to its full potential if you don’t use it correctly. Mascara application is inherently intuitive, however, Tilbury offers a more specific, foolproof way to get the top result. “The best way to use Exagger-Eyes Volume Mascara is by holding the brush wand horizontally, then pulling up the lashes in a zig-zag motion from side to side, nestling the brush into the lash line,” she explains. “It is so important to coat every lash from the root to the very tip, to avoid a clogged effect that looks too heavy.”

If after your initial application, you still want extra definition, Tilbury has yet another trick up her sleeve. “Another one of my hacks for defined, intensified lashes is to take the tip of the wand and coat the inner and outer corners, and lower lash line for precise definition,” she adds. Although one coat is all you need, the formula is still buildable for this exact reason. 

Prep With the Immediate Eye Revival Patches

Whether you are creating a sharp cat eye or just need to give your under eyes some extra TLC, under-eye patches are a go-to product for skincare and makeup prep. Tilbury shared that she uses them in a variety of ways to boost glam. “You can multitask and wear them while applying your eye makeup,” she says. “Sometimes I even wear them over makeup!” But what formula does she use? Her second launch of the week, the Immediate Eye Revival Patches. 

These under-eye patches are clinically proven to hydrate, reduce the appearance of fine lines and dark circles, and depuff the under-eye area. Apply them gently under each eye and let them sit while you apply eyeshadow, eyeliner, and mascara. Once you are ready to peel them away, the area will look smoother, brighter, and lifted. Tilbury points out that there is no sticky residue left behind which means you can immediately follow up with your favorite concealer or complexion product.

As fall quickly approaches, and we attempt to hold on to the last days of summer makeup, Tilbury offers three tips for saving that seasonal glowy makeup. 

Prep Skin With a Moisturizer 

“Summer makeup is all about creating healthy, dewy summer skin,” says Tilbury. Any beauty expert knows that the key to achieving a lasting glowy complexion all starts with how you prep your skin. Tilbury recommends her Magic Cream. “It is a moisturizer, re-texturizer and primer all in one,” she explains. “It is the perfect canvas for makeup and boosts your skin barrier over time.” 

Use a Setting Spray 

“The key to making your makeup last in the summer heat is to use a setting spray,” says Tilbury.
