Christopher Briney Say This Fragrance Makes Him “Want to Go on a Date”

Byrdie Boy

Byrdie Boy is our series here to break outdated perceptions of men and beauty. We’ll be highlighting the routines, product picks, and musings of cool guys with a unique POV, so our male and man-aligned readers can learn about skincare, makeup, and hair from a trusted, inclusive source. Christopher Briney of The Summer I Turned Pretty, tells us about his ’90s heartthrob hair and the scents that remind him of home.

Actor Christopher Briney loves the smell of vanilla and pine trees, so it makes sense that he’d vibe with Giorgio Armani’s new fragrance. The Summer I Turned Pretty and Mean Girls actor is one of the faces of the Italian house’s new Stronger With You Intensely, a woody scent with notes of—you guessed it!—vanilla, plus amber and pink pepper.

Briney is part of Armani’s Gen A collective, a group of young stars including Outer Banks actor Chase Stokes, Riverdale stars Lili Reinhart and Camila Mendes, All American actor Michael Evans Behling, and Madame Web star Isabela Merced. While he may get glammed up on set and for photoshoots, he keeps his routine pretty low-key IRL. Yes, that means letting his signature movie star heartthrob hair air dry!

Ahead, we chatted with the star about that famous head of hair, his daily routine both on- and off-set, and what you’d find if you snooped in his bathroom cabinet.

You have the ultimate ‘90s and ‘00s-esque heartthrob hair. Any secrets behind your hairstyle? How often do you get it cut, what products do you use?

“The secret is my groomer, Melissa DeZarate. She’s taught me how to take care of my hair. I only cut it if it’s for a project or if my hairstylist tells me it’s time.

“My everyday routine is pretty simple: wake up, shower, and let my hair air dry. When working, I like to use mousse to keep the shape and for some texture. Then I finish it off with some texture spray.”

What is your grooming routine like when you’re not at work?

“I shave every two weeks and shower every day. Aquaphor is always in hand.”

What’s your routine like when you’re on set? What are your essentials for a workday?

“Aquaphor, Emporio Armani Stronger With You Intensely, a hair comb, and blotting sheets. I usually have the Armani Beauty Luminous Silk Concealer on hand for my under eyes or if I have any pimples. Also, self-tanner for when we shoot in the winter for a show that’s supposed to take place during the summer.”

Have you learned anything in the hair and makeup trailer that you incorporated into your personal routine?

“I wash my face a lot more, especially when I’m wearing makeup on set. I have a nighttime routine more so than before. No one likes going to bed without clean skin.”

What’s the first thing you do in the morning and the last thing you do before bed?

“Wash face, moisturize skin, and check to see if the Red Sox won. Basically the same thing in the AM and the PM. ”

Let’s talk about the Armani fragrance. What makes it stand out to you?

“I like that it has its own personality. It makes you want to go out, go on a date. It feels specific. It makes you feel confident, it wants to be worn for an intimate or romantic setting.”

What are your favorite smells in general, not just fragrance-wise?

“Freshly mowed grass. I like the smell of autumn, like when you wake up and it’s like, ‘Oh it’s fall.’ The smells of pines… I was in Pinehurst, North Carolina recently and the smell of pines throughout the town was so nice. And also, vanilla—who doesn’t love the smell of vanilla?”

What was the first fragrance you ever bought yourself or received as a gift? What do you think of it now?

“When I was younger my best friend from home got me this random drug store spray.  I have no clue what it was, but it was a little less intense than an Axe body spray. I think of it as an introduction to fragrance. I don’t really remember the scent, but it made me start to think of picking a scent to pair with what I’m doing, like ‘I’m going out so I want to wear something that makes me feel confident’ or ‘I’m going on a date and I want to wear something that makes me feel sexy.’ ”

If we were to look in your bathroom cabinet right now, what would we find?

“Aquaphor, toothpaste, moisturizer, Band-Aids, and self-tanner.”
