A hair color change is just about the biggest transformation you can make—ask Julia Roberts, who just swapped her soft brown hair for a bright golden blonde color for the Joe Biden fundraiser in Los Angeles. There’s no better time to go lighter than the warmer months, especially with shades like It Girl blonde and desert sand having a moment. Roberts’ new shade embodies sunny energy, just in time for summer.
On June 16, Robert’s longtime colorist, Kadi Lee, posted photos of the actor’s hair change ahead of the event on Instagram. Going from dark hair to blonde can be difficult, and Lee wrote in the caption that her approach is “slow and steady” and that keeping the hair healthy is her main priority.
Roberts’ blonde wasn’t too cool or warm and was the perfect neutral shade. Some of her brown roots were left untouched, giving the overall color a laidback look from being totally bright blonde. The 56-year-old also changed her go-to style of blunt bangs to a softer curtain style that framed her face. She styled her layered hair in loose waves, courtesy of hairstylist Serge Normant, which illuminated the dimension of darker and lighter highlights in her new color.
Call us crazy, but blonde Julia Roberts feels like a good summer omen. Her hairstylist shared that the last time she opted for a blonde change was nearly seven years ago. Her biggest takeaway for surviving a drastic color change like this one? “Go gently, in multiple sessions. Do not be pressured by drastic and unrealistic before and after pictures on Instagram,” she said in the caption.
For her glam, Roberts worked with makeup artist Molly R. Stern who crafted a soft, barely-there makeup look. She wore a glossy lip, a swipe of mascara, and a brown eyeshadow look, and she topped it off with a wash of pink blush on her cheeks.
Roberts wore a black puff-sleeved midi-dress from Greta Constantine and paired the dress with Chanel pumps, courtesy of stylist Elizabeth Stuart. She was joined by George Clooney, who also had blonde highlights for the occasion.
