A number of hairstyles are famous in the world of The Kardashians. The girls’ natural dark hair, worn long and middle parted, is an all-timer. Then you get any bleached look—they’ve all done it. Kris Jenner’s pixie fits the bill, as do Kylie Jenner’s vivid hues from her Tumblr era. I’d go so far as to throw in Kim Kardashian’s 2019 Met Gala wet look, which has been repurposed over the years, and Kourtney’s bob is on its way to the hall of fame as well.
All that is to say, when a Kardashian does something other than one of their go-tos, a fuss must be made. Kim Kardashian is the latest sister to debut a surprising hairstyle, and while she did pick from the classics… it’s really not what you’d expect. Just days after debuting a rooty platinum style, the Skims owner ditched her signature length for short (the Kris/Kourtney effect) and pale pink (all hail the King Kylie) locks.
Sharing only a pink heart emoji to explain the new look, Kim posted an Instagram carousel late in the evening on April 29. Naturally, she tagged hairstylist Chris Appleton in the post. The professional’s own social media pages don’t offer any more clues as to the sudden change; besides a personal photo dump, the last thing he shared was a little insight on the platinum blonde look he created for his famous friend over the weekend.
“I colored it in a couple of sessions to keep the integrity of the hair nice and juicy,” he wrote of the blonde. Which I love from a hair health perspective… but if you were planning to chop it all off anyway what was the point?
In her photo set, Kim paired the Megan Fox-esque bubblegum shade—I’ll note that her roots are still dark—with a Skims turtleneck and over-the-knee Balenciaga boots. Her new cut hits just at her cheekbones (absolutely glowing thanks to the also-tagged SKKN by Kim products she uses) and there’s a wet component to the styling—remember what I said about that hall of fame?
Unsurprisingly, the comments on Kim’s Instagram post were absolutely full of fans comparing her style to ex-husband Kanye West’s current wife, Bianca Censori, who rocks a similar cut. Inspiration can come from anywhere, but if I were Kourtney, I’d stand my ground as the blueprint.
