Take control of what goes into your body with your own natural skin and hair care products!

Our skin is our largest organ and absorbs like a sponge what is placed on the outer layer, drawing it deeper into the inner layers and dispersing it into the bloodstream. Many of the bath and beauty products we use contain toxic chemical substances, but it is easy to make your own safe, natural alternatives.

Sojourner Walker Williams has been perfecting her natural beauty products for years and is trusted by her many faithful consumers. She is an Ayurvedic practitioner, yoga instructor, and wellness blogger, and in her travels has sought out natural, effective beauty solutions from around the world.

In Natural Beauty From the Outside In she takes you with her on her journeys of discovery around the world. Travel with her to Thailand, where she discovers the miracles of coconut oil, and to Ghana, where she learns of the many uses of shea butter. Each chapter is devoted to a location and an important ingredient, and is full of recipes that are easy to make in your kitchen. Don’t worry. You won’t have to travel to find ingredients. They are all found easily in stores or online sources. Sojourner shares 75 of her most popular recipes, plus many hints for usage, storing and preserving, and sensitive skin considerations.

This is everyone’s birthright.

Intentionally nourishing myself from the outside in, as well as from the inside out with the foods I ate, was so affirming. Knowing exactly what was in each of my daily products was a relief. Knowing that most of my body care was edible and that it was all nontoxic, and having the ability to create on-the-spot formulations to address my unique needs and the needs of my family with competence, confidence, and purity—whether dealing with eczema-prone skin, diaper rash, dandruff, acne, athlete’s foot, or crow’s feet—made me feel like an herbal superwoman. —Sojourner Walker Williams, foreword

Herbs and Spices from Zanzibar

“There are so many different ways to use spices and dried herbs directly on the skin or in skin formulations. Our earliest human ancestors understood the benefits of this practice in a quite intimate and remarkable way… Nature, not the lab, creates some of the most effective and pleasurable skin formulations.

Vinegar Extractions from Japan

“Cherry blossom plum vinegar was a vinegar made from cherry blossom extract, and it was often used in Japanese skin care products to smooth skin texture due to its anti-aging properties. Cherry blossom plum vinegar is rich in caffeic acid and phenolic antioxidants… resulting in a smooth, clear, hydrated, and even complexion.”

Plant Barks from Mozambique

“Trees are living beings. When working with trees, take care and practice ‘nonharm.’ Harvesting bark can be traumatic for trees. Be gentle, give thanks, and take only what you need.”

Whipped Coconut and Aloe Body Lotion

Yields 8 ounces, 20 minutes of preparation time

This is a very light and soothing lotion ideal for summertime use. The aloe assists in calming sun-sensitive skin, while the coconut oil cools. This is also an ideal lotion to apply after shaving the legs or face.

If your coconut oil is hard, soften it by running the jar under warm water. With a spoon, mix the coconut oil, aloe vera gel, vitamin E, and essential oil until thoroughly blended. Refrigerate for 10 minutes. Whip by blending with a hand blender on high to a frosting-like consistency.
