Rare Beauty’s Latest Drop Was Inspired by Selena Gomez’s ‘Only Murders in the Building’ Character

Listen: we can’t all be primary-color loving amateur detectives living in a historic Upper West Side apartment and spending all of our time with two iconic older men (and fellow amateur detectives) that happen to be our neighbors. But we can do our makeup like we are!

In a truly inspired move, Rare Beauty has partnered with Hulu to release a limited-edition makeup kit in honor of Selena Gomez’s Only Murders in the Building character, Mabel Mora. Launching August 27 to coincide with the show’s Season 4 premiere, Mabel Mora’s Go-To Duo features a pair of full-size, fan-favorite products—one in a new shade!—that are entirely Mabel-esque.

Ahead, everything to know about the collaboration. (Now we just need one for Meryl Streep’s character, too.)

The Inspiration

It should come as a surprise to absolutely no one that the go-to makeup brand on set of Only Murders is Gomez’s very own Rare Beauty. When transforming the actress into her character, makeup department head Arielle Toelke reaches for Soft Pinch Tinted Lip Oil in the rose brown shade Delight and a Soft Pinch Liquid Blush in the new, previously set-exclusive warm chestnut shade Resilience.

“These cheek and lip essentials are perfect for creating easy, everyday looks in wearable, rosy brown hues inspired by your favorite amateur sleuth,” shares the brand.

To mark the show’s premiere, it made perfect sense to launch the products as a pair and get the exclusive shade into fans’ hands and/or on their faces for their watch parties. Honestly, entertainment and beauty collabs are a match made in heaven; just look at A24 and Half Magic’s recent Maxxxine makeup set or their Priscilla collab from last fall.

The Formula

Isn’t it great when a launch has to do with something(s) you already love? At Byrdie, we’re big fans of both the Soft Pinch Liquid Blush and Tinted Lip Oil.

“I’ve used liquid blushes before, but this one surpasses other products in pigmentation, blendability, and staying power,” we said in our review of the blush. Meanwhile, the oil quickly became a staff standby when it launched in March 2023. (“I wanted to make a lip product that created the same effect that the Soft Pinch Liquid Blush does for cheeks, but for lips,” Gomez told Byrdie at the time. “Something that adds a flush of color but that’s comfortable and buildable.”)

Both products are cruelty-free, vegan, paraben-free, dermatologist tested, and suitable for sensitive skin… and perhaps most importantly very pretty/workable outside of a cosplay situation.

“Airy, lightweight, and long-lasting, [Resilience] gives the skin a soft, healthy flush that blends like a dream and layers beautifully over other formulas,” adds the brand. “Delight starts off glossy, then leaves lips tinted while staying comfortable—never sticky—all day. Give it one swipe for a slick wash of color, or layer up for a bold, juicy pop.”

It’s only murders (by which we mean non-violent slays) in the makeup department.
