Scrunchies vs. Elastic Hair Ties: Which One Is Better?

Simple accessories can spark fierce debates—flats versus heels, silver versus gold, and, of course, scrunchies versus elastic hair ties. Some people prefer to fasten their hair with soft, statement-making scrunchies, while others turn to hair ties to hold their ponytails tight. But which one reigns supreme? In terms of your hair health, there’s only one clear winner, according to hairstylists. Keep reading to find out more.

What Is a Hair Tie?

“Hair ties” is the colloquial term for the thread-wrapped rubber bands. These useful accessories are made from elasticized rubber (and sometimes metal), come in various colors, and offer a secure, discrete way to tie up your hair.

While these ties are great for holding styles in place, they aren’t so great for your actual hair, as they’re known to rip out strands and cause breakage. To minimize the damage as much as possible, Emtage says to look for metal-free bands and consider the thickness of your hair when choosing a size (thinner bands for finer hair and thicker ones for thicker textures). “Also, try to avoid tying your hair too tightly with elastics to minimize stress on your hair and scalp,” she says, adding that you should never go to bed with an elastic because it can damage your hair while you sleep.

Even if you’ve got the best products and practices in your arsenal, Emtage still recommends reserving elastic bands only for times when scrunchies won’t do the trick. “Opt for an elastic hair tie when you need a secure, tight hold, like during exercise, or for more formal, polished hairstyles where you don’t want the hair tie to be visible,” she says.

What Is a Scrunchie?

Think of a scrunchie as a hair tie’s gentler and more extravagant cousin. “Scrunchies are made from soft fabric and hold the hair in place less securely than elastics,” Cottin explains.

While the “less secure” hold of a scrunchie may be annoying in terms of styling, it’s a whole lot better for the health of your hair. “Scrunchies are generally better for hair health as they put less direct pressure and friction on the same area of hair, therefore resulting in less damage or breakage,” Cottin adds.

Better yet, scrunchies can double as playful accessories. “They add a pop of color or texture to your hair,” Emtage says. There are so many types of scrunchies that incorporate classic bows or other decorations that can enhance an updo or even a simple pony,” Cottin adds.

How to Choose Which Is Best for Your Hair

Consider Your Hair Health

When choosing between a scrunchie and a hair tie, the current condition of your hair should play a role. As Cottin points out, “The less you use elastic ties, the better for your hair health.” If you have fine, damaged hair prone to breakage, try to steer clear of hair bands as much as possible.

“Elastic hair ties can sometimes be too tight and cause hair to snap, especially if they have a metal connector,” adds Emtage. Scrunchies are generally better for hair health because they are less likely to cause breakage. The fabric covering provides a buffer that reduces friction and tension, which is especially important if you have fine, curly, or damaged hair.”

Think About Your Desired Hairstyle

The biggest difference between elastics and scrunchies is their hold level, but both lend themselves well to certain styles. “Scrunchies are great for looser, more relaxed hairstyles like messy buns and ponytails, and even work well as a cute wrist accessory. They add volume and can be a stylish statement piece,” Emtage says. “Elastic hair ties are better for sleek, tight styles where you need a firm hold, like a high ponytail, braids, or when you need to keep your hair out of your face during workouts.”

Factor in Your Daily Activities

Though elastics are typically the less desirable choice, there are certain situations when they win out over scrunchies. “They’re excellent during sports or any other strenuous activities when you need to keep your hair off your face,” Cottin says. Try to stick with a scrunchie in all other situations (especially when you’re sleeping).

The Final Takeaway

Elastic hair ties and scrunchies are the most common styling accessories—we all likely have a plethora of both in our bathrooms. However, there are key differences between the two. Elastic hair ties provide a tighter, more secure hold thanks to their rubber band design. Scrunchies, on the other hand, are made with soft fabrics and gentle elastics, making them less likely to pull hair and cause breakage.

Ultimately, hairstylists agree that scrunchies are the better choice for maintaining hair health, but there’s still a place for elastic hair ties in your routine. “Each has its styling strengths,” says Emtage. “It’s always good to switch things up.”
