This Is Jenna Ortega’s Secret to Perfect, Swoopy Bangs

The Venice Film Festival is in full swing, and the cast of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is having their well-deserved method-dressing moment. Jenna Ortega arrived on the red carpet channeling her co-star Winona Ryder with wispy bangs and a custom tulle Dior dress reminiscent of Lydia Deetz’s iconic red wedding dress from the original film.

Throughout the Beetlejuice Beetlejuice press tour, Ortega has opted for gothic looks inspired by the film’s quirky-creepy aesthetic with the glam to go with it. This time, she worked with hairstylist Bobby Eliot to craft her chic updo, who told Byrdie his simple hack to achieving her perfect curtain bangs.

“Since her gown called to mind the red wedding dress from the original film, we wanted to give the entire look a modernized, yet timeless take,” Eliot explained. “We created an ethereal, swept-up hair look featuring a loose deconstructed low knot and wispy bangs to frame her face.”

Ortega’s curtain bangs sat right at the tails of her eyebrows and were perfectly placed at the sides of her temples. The hack to get them to stay put in the “perfect swoop,” acccording to Eliot? “To not weigh the fringe down with heavy products!” he told Byrdie. “My go-to method is to warm up a very small amount of Fenty Hair The Controlling Type Hair-Thickening Edge Control Gel with my fingertips for about 5-10 seconds and then very gently apply to the bangs and hairline to tame flyaways.”

For the finishing touches, Eliot used the Fenty Hair The Side Stick 3-In-1 Edge Styling Tool to “lock in the swoop design.” He added that he prefers “to use a tool versus my hands or a brush because it’s more precise and you have more control for any design or placement.”

To prep her hair before styling, Eliot also used the Fenty Hair The Protective Type 5-In-1 Heat Protectant Styler which he applied throughout the hair in sections, avoiding the root.

The 21-year-old’s monochromatic makeup look was crafted by Mélanie Inglessis, who smoked out a red eyeshadow across her lid, applying black eyeliner in her waterline for definition and finishing with a swipe of mascara. To complement the eyeshadow, Ortega wore rosy blushed cheeks and matching red lipstick.

If we say “Beetlejuice” three times will curtain fringe bangs appear? Fingers crossed they’ll look like Ortega’s if they do.
