After Tyla took the Met Gala red carpet by storm in a custom Balmain sand gown, we knew she was a style icon in the making. At the BET Awards last night, the “Water” singer continued her streak of being best-dressed: She wore a vintage studded Versace gown from 2004 paired with glowy, just-got-back-from-vacation makeup.
On June 30, Tyla attended the awards alongside Victoria Monét, Keke Palmer, Ice Spice, and more. For the ceremony, the 22-year-old balanced the edginess of her studded halter-neck gown and animal print train (her dress was very Y2K) with a bronzy, glowing makeup look—and Tyla’s makeup artist, Matthew Fishman, gave us all the details. “For tonight’s red carpet, I wanted skin perfecting, minimal makeup,” Fishman tells Byrdie. “She is a glowy angel, so enhancing her natural features is always my go-to.”
Fishman used all Charlotte Tilbury products to craft the look. To start, he prepped the singer’s skin with the Charlotte Tilbury Magic Hydrator Mist. Next, he added the brand’s Magic Water Cream which was “key to the glass, natural skin look I was going for,” he shared. “A hydrated base is so important for any red carpet look, and Magic Water Cream is a staple in my kit since it’s fragrance-free and instantly plumps the look of skin.” The last step in the prep process was adding a swipe of Magic Eye Rescue under her eyes.
Along with her super glowy skin, the focal point of the makeup was her chic nude lip and fun winged eyeliner. “We kept the complexion natural and glowy, with a super defined Pillow Talk lip and sharp winged eyeliner to enhance those features,” Fishman said. Her eyeliner leaned into the rockstar feel of her dress, while her natural glow felt timeless and classic—it made for the perfect balanced glam. “To emphasize the eye, I used Feline Flick Eyeliner in Panther to create a sharp wing,” he shared. “The lip is super defined with Pillow Talk Intense Lip Cheat with Pillow Talk Plumpgasm on top for a full, high-shine look.”
The key product to achieve the singer’s ultra-glowy, yet classic glam was undeniably the Unreal Skin Foundation. “I love that minimal, skin-focused look and this was perfect to instantly give the skin a smooth, soft-focused glow.” He notes that the formula is hydrating, smoothing, and blurring, while still looking natural on the skin, and he loves the buildable coverage. “It was a must for tonight’s carpet!” he raved. “Since it’s so smooth, you can glide the foundation on your face starting at the center and blending outwards using a complexion brush.”
The three words Fishman uses to describe her glam are “toasty, glowy skin,” a.k.a the ideal summertime glow. “For summer, we love to look like we’ve been sitting in the sun all day, and that is what we went for tonight with Tyla! Unreal Skin Foundation was perfect to give her that soft glow. I followed that with the Hollywood Contour Wand to sculpt the face while also adding a sun-kissed effect.”
The finishing touch to Tyla’s ethereal vacation glow was adding a bit of shine to her body. Fishman used the Magic Body Cream to hydrate her skin and topped it off with the Charlotte Tilbury Supermodel Body, an all-over highlighter, to illuminate the skin.
